Report on investigation into the Australian Tax Office - Media Release

REPORT ON INVESTIGATION INTO THE AUSTRALIAN TAX OFFICE

Over a month ago, Labor leader Bill Shorten called for an investigation into the Australian Tax Office after troubling allegations were raised by a joint Fairfax Media-Four Corners investigation.

The Turnbull Government heeded our call, announcing an urgent investigation.

Labor calls on the Government to provide an update on that investigation, including the release of the report conducted by Treasury.

Genuine concerns have been raised and Labor will continue to ensure that a thorough investigation has been conducted.

Labor also seeks clarification on whether the investigation addressed legitimate concerns that tax office staff have been left struggling as a result of staffing cuts by the Coalition.

Under the Abbott-Turnbull Government, more than 4,000 jobs have been slashed from the Australian Tax Office, making life harder for Australians who just want to pay their taxes and get on with their work.

Labor has announced additional resources for the Australian Tax Office as part of our tax measures. We are committed to appropriate resourcing for regulators and enforcement agencies.

The Turnbull Government cannot just blame public servants. After virtually decimating the public service, the Coalition cannot shirk responsibility when things go wrong.
