MEMBER FOR CANBERRA
Andrew Leigh, the first Federal Member for Fenner, attended the Australian Electoral Commission’s Canberra office today to accept the formal declaration of the poll for the redrawn and renamed seat formerly known as Fraser.
“I feel deeply honoured to be representing the people of Canberra’s northside for another three years, and I thank them for the trust they continue to place in me,” Dr Leigh said.
“I am immensely proud of the ideas that the Labor Party took to the election – and with which we achieved a swing to the party in the ACT – including our fights to save Medicare, for better schools, super-fast broadband and a public service that is strong and respected.
“While the name of the electorate has changed, my responsibility to serve its people has not. Along with my ACT Labor colleagues Gai Brodtmann and Senator Katy Gallagher, as well as the rest of the Labor team, I will work every day for a fairer, more prosperous, more just society and to hold this Government to account.
“Thanks to my opponents for joining me in this festival of democracy and to the staff of the Australian Electoral Commission. I am particularly indebted to my team and all the volunteers who worked so hard for so long to win Fenner for the Labor Party, and to my family for all their support, all the time.”
Federal Member for Canberra Gai Brodtmann was also at the Divisional Office to accept the result of the formal declaration of the Poll.
“I am privileged and grateful to be officially elected for a third term as the Member for Canberra,” Ms Brodtmann said.
“I have always been proud to represent the people of Canberra, and I remain committed as ever to fighting every day for a better deal for the national capital.”
“I would like to thank the AEC and its dedicated staff for their efforts.”
“I also acknowledge the good, clean campaign run by my fellow candidates for the division of Canberra, and I thank them for conducting themselves in a spirit that honours the intelligence and integrity of the voters of Canberra.”
“I am honoured to serve Canberra for another term, and thank the people of Canberra for their trust and support.”
