$1.5 Million For Upgrades For Upgrades At Margaret Timpson Park

7 April 2025

Member for Fenner Dr Andrew Leigh has today announced that a re-elected Albanese Labor Government will deliver $1.5 million for upgrades at Margaret Timpson Park in Belconnen.

This election commitment would go towards providing a new playground, public toilets, picnic tables, a barbecue area, an accessible ramp on the northern edge of the park and landscaping works.

Located in the heart of Belconnen’s town centre, the beloved park is named after Margaret Timpson, who was an influential figure in the women’s movement.

These improvements will ensure that residents, businesses, workers and visitors can continue to enjoy the hub for recreation activities such as picnics, walks and social gatherings.

This significant election commitment comes in addition to Labor’s strong record delivering for Canberrans, which includes:

  • $53.5 million for ACT roads to ease congestion - including $3.5 million to complete the duplication of Gundaroo Drive.
  • More tax cuts for every ACT taxpayer. Combined with our first round of tax cuts, the average benefit for ACT taxpayers is almost $2,900 in 2027-28.
  • A further $150 Energy Bill Relief for all households and for small businesses.
  • Even cheaper medicines, with a PBS script to cost no more than $25.
  • Investing in secure and permanent APS jobs.
  • NBN upgrades and faster internet for 97,000 more homes and businesses. Cutting HECS debts for 55,000 Canberrans (an average ACT reduction of $5,680).
  • An additional $331 million for ACT schools over 10 years.
  • $630 million for our hospitals in 2025-26.
  • Better healthcare for women, opening an ACT Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinic and making contraceptives, menopause treatments and IVF medications cheaper.
  • Delivering thousands of Free TAFE places, and we will make it permanent.

Consistent with past practice, election commitments will be delivered in line with Commonwealth Grants Rules and Principles.

Quotes attributable to Member for Fenner, Dr Andrew Leigh:

“In the heart of Belconnen, Margaret Timpson Park is a place where kids play, families picnic, and our community comes together.

“This upgrade will ensure it remains a vibrant, welcoming space for everyone to enjoy for years to come.

“Investing in community spaces like this is about fairness and liveability.

“Whether you’re a kid on the playground or a senior out for a stroll, everyone deserves a safe and accessible place to relax and connect.

“Some investments show up in GDP. Others show up in giggles and shared lunches. This is the latter.”
