Senators slam 'absurd' and 'illogical' tax transparency rollback - Joint Media Release

SENATORS SLAM ‘ABSURD’ AND ‘ILLOGICAL’ TAX TRANSPARENCY ROLLBACK

Joint media release with Senator Sam Dastyari

Senators have tonight condemned the Abbott-Turnbull Government for its attempts to gut Australia’s tax transparency laws.

Labor and crossbench Senators have tabled a forceful dissenting report on the Government bill which seeks to help Australia’s richest companies keep their tax affairs secret.

In particular, the report rejects in the strongest possible terms the Government’s ridiculous invocation of the UN’s International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to justify rolling back tax transparency for companies worth more than $100 million.

As the report states: “Invoking this instrument is an obnoxious attempt to misguide the public, press and the parliament. It has no connection to tax privacy, and the claim deserves both derision and ridicule.”

Passing this bill will not only erode public confidence in our tax system. It will also undermine any lingering public faith in the integrity of this Government.
