Just when I thought I was so alone that the only option left was to submit to the mindless madness of murdoch land ... what's this I see up ahead? Hell, it's a light on the hill! And hell again, there are others who can see it too. Thank you Andrew. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I'm lifted up.

Hi Andrew,
I thought I would make you feel a bit better my income is $266.50 per week on a Austudy and am aged 56, and am a single Mum and have a mortgage that has $220,000.00 left to pay on it - I am not an economist, but I would say my debt to income ratio is pretty high. Bugger whinging about it, you need to spend money to live and it takes us all a long time to pay down our debts. That's life let's all get on with it. The people that are the neediest are the ones who really don't understand what the Coalition are proposing to do to us. What they also don't understand that there are fewer of them than there is of us. Who is going to empty their bins, drive their cars, supply goodies to their local Supermarkets. We all need to get real and let them know that if they don't make provision for those of us at the bottom of the food chain. We will all just give up and walk away and leave them with nothing to govern. We need a return to Social Justice and escape from the Neo-liberalist's Capitalism. The Neo-Liberalist's capitalist in the US were the ones responsible for the GFC in the first place. The GFC that rocked the whole world, but they have never paid for their alienation of those poor people that they knew could never afford the prime loans they were supplied with. Wake up Australia it is time we appreciated what Ms Gillard and Mr Swan and co. were able to do during some extremely harrowing times over the last few years. They are the team that will ultimately understand the Social Justice aspect of our needs, not Mr Abbott. Through all this and a hung parliament as well - what the hell else could they do. I have not seen, not understand the side that explains the oppositions points. Please allow me to understand how it could have been different, or could be in the future.

If only!!!! Excellent article and so well written. Maybe we should give Tony Abbott a jab of truth serum. It is obvious that he will have to "slash and burn" as Wayne Swan says to get anywhere near balancing the budget. I shudder to think what Australia will go through with him in charge.

Being a West Australian, I would bet that the state government would not build the rail line to the airport, or their touted light rail. Most rail construction has been achieved by Labor when it was in power, including the electrification of the train lines, and the construction of the Joondalup and Mandurah rail lines. The Liberals are sinking some or the railway near Perth, but that does not add any capacity, it is just an exercise in reclaiming land. There is nothing wrong with that, but its not an investment in public transport.

Colin's election promises were clearly not meant to be kept, and I'm pretty sure that no one who thought about it, be they Liberal or Labor, had any expectation to the contrary.

Andrew is my local MP and he was up against two Liberals who stuck to traditional and boring messages while Andrew was positive and did very well as Parlaimentary Secretary to the PM. Looking forward to this election when Liberals will be consigned to history showing they still wnat Workchoices and who can believe them that they won't do that in first term if they were disastriously elected for the future of working Australians. As for future of public service, particulatrly in Canberra, that would be decomated should Liberals win an election so that must not be allowed to happen.

Ditto re nice speech Andrew though I think you know my thoughts on Paul F after his offensive remarks at 2006 ASSA workshop on Social Capital (and how exactly are his "scandalous statements encouraged" in contemporary academia?)

Thought I might've seen you last week at ANZSOG-hosted address from the far more adept and articulate David Halperin in Canberra and esp the work of his BI team: https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/behavioural-insights-team

... would be a great legacy for Gillard govt to create an equivalent in DPM&C before handing the baton over post Sept 14.

Andrew,
Re top income inequality.
Your figures are based on ATO's stats on taxable incomes. But those omit tax-free income such as 'funded' pensions from Unisuper etc, and 'allocated pensions' from self-managed super funds. Some of the latter exceed $1m a year. ATO advice is that such exempt income need not be disclosed in recipients' tax returns. So ATO has no direct data on them.

Thank you Andrew.
It is an incredibly distressing condition and there is not a lot of progress towards better treatments.
Once I worked very long hours as a ministerial media adviser and now I struggle to work an hour a
day.
I hope you continue to work for us on this in your new Parl Sec role, congratulations.
Best wishes to Samm too.

Your appointment is some much needed good news. Congratulations! The Government needs to articulate and disseminate the contrast between the two major parties, including philosophical and ethical differences. For example, the right wing ideology of the Abbott led Libs construes and constructs the so-called 'welfare' system as a punitive sin bin to deter worker-consumers from non-compliance and deviation; whereas for Labour, it is, or should be, an expression of the moral principle of common dignity, and an enabling underpinning of equitable distribution of capabilities (in the Amatya Sen-Martha Nussbaum sense). I don't think most Australians understand what is at stake in the political choice they will have to make in September - nor whose interests are actually represented and advanced by each of the major parties, respectively. And whose are not! Cui bono?

Intellectual and rhetorical work needs to be done to demolish and replace the outworn metaphor of conflict (war, battle, fight, conquest etc.) which we have lived by, and with, for far too long. It goes with the pernicious framing of society and power as competitive, exclusionary, hierarchical patriarchy - which has surely already caused too much trouble - catastrophe? - for humanity. With respect to Gloria Steinem for the phrase: try linking, instead of ranking!

Further to my comment above . . .

If you set out to be "FIGHTING alongside the PM"(para 6), that is exactly the way it will be.Remember,'as ones thinking is such one becomes'.

Please consider reframing your intentions with constructive, purposeful language. You CAN make a difference.

Now you're in a better position to lobby the PM on behalf of your constituents, you can tell her that Newstart allowance is NOT ENOUGH to make a new start - looking for good work can take more than a year in this place. You spend a lot of time fretting about money to pay bills, it takes your concentration away from the main task of looking for work. Raise the allowance.

Here here. While part of the pleasure is also the travel and the newness of the experience, I think these experiences are often life-changing and, at the least, life and contribution affirming, so that these folks come back enriched themselves and they, in-turn, enrich us.

Congratulations Dr Leigh - though I have to call you out on your cringe-worthy joke. `Honoured' now that you're `the Honourable Dr Andrew Leigh MP'?

Best wishes in your new role

Well put. The most amazing change i ever saw in an individual was being placed on random drug/alcohol testing while on parole. The guy became sober and .. relatively normal. Most prisoners/criminals have drug/alcohol issues and the forced sobriety of prison is one of the few positive impacts of imprisonment.

Well said. Harsher punishment is used to placate the electorate after the horse has bolted. I recently read an article where New York's low incarceration rate was attributed to more effective policing. In a nutshell, if you make it harder to commit crimes (mainly by targeting your police at high crime areas), then crime falls. Apparently it doesn't just move to another location, because the conditions necessary for crime to flourish are not that easy to find.
